Calculations are based on findings from an independent lifecycle assessment (LCA) of drink containers returned to Recycle Rewards refund points (reverse vending machines and depots) across Tasmania.

The LCA is a study that looks at all the carbon emissions/energy/water used to participate and run the container refund scheme – from consumers taking containers to refund point to sorting, transporting and recycling those containers – and it compares this with the carbon emissions/energy/water that’s saved from not using virgin materials to create new containers.

Carbon emissions are the gases in the atmosphere that trap heat and lead to increasing global temperatures – principally carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide – and are expressed as kilograms of carbon dioxide equivalence (CO2-eq).
