In just 12 months, Tasmanians have returned more than 118 million drink containers through Recycle Rewards, turning everyday recycling into meaningful action for the environment and local communities.
Recycle Rewards: Year One Scorecard
- 202 containers returned per person through Recycle Rewards RVMs and depots – the highest in the first year of a container refund scheme in Australia
- 118 million containers returned into the circular economy, reducing landfill and litter
- $11.8 million refunded to Tasmanians
- 60+ jobs created, many through social enterprises supporting people facing barriers to work
- 49 refund points established statewide, including reverse vending machines, four major depots and new sorting infrastructure
Environmental impact
By participating in the circular economy, Tasmanians have helped save:
- Enough energy to power about 2100 homes for a year
- 750 million litres of water – or 300 aquatic-centre sized swimming pools
- 18,000 tonnes of carbon emissions – equivalent to taking more than 9100 cars off the road
Social impact
Recycle Rewards is powered by a network of social enterprises, creating jobs and training opportunities for people facing barriers to employment and strengthening inclusive participation in the workforce.
Tasmanians have also used Recycle Rewards to donate more than $310,000 to local charities and community groups. This new fundraising stream has turned containers into vital funding while helping keep recyclables out of landfill.
Rotary Club of North Hobart member Adam Reibel collects containers for Recycle Rewards at North Hobart Oval on game days.
“These donations are helping Rotary clubs deliver for communities right across Tasmania,” Mr Reibel said.
“Here in North Hobart, we’re making emergency accommodation shelters more welcoming and giving young Tasmanians leadership skills aboard the tall ship Windeward Bound.”
Of the 118 million containers returned to date:
- 57 million were returned in the south
- 34 million in the north
- 27 million in the north-west
These results reflect Tasmania’s strong participation in Recycle Rewards and the growing impact of the state’s circular economy.
