As the weather warms up and Tasmanians fire up the barbie, hit the beaches and head to festivals, Recycle Rewards is reminding everyone that the summer season is also recycling season.
With millions of extra drink containers expected to be enjoyed over the coming months, TasRecycle CEO Ken Roughley says now’s the perfect time to start collecting those refunds – whether for yourself or a good cause – through the state’s container refund scheme.
“Summer in Tasmania is packed with events, picnics and gatherings – and that means lots of bottles, cans and cartons,” Mr Roughley said.
“If everyone makes a habit of collecting and returning their containers, we can put more dollars back into local pockets and community causes – and help keep our beautiful state in a beautiful state.”
Tasmanians’ embrace of the scheme has made it the fastest growing container refund scheme in the country – and the summer bounty could continue the trend. “There are more than 300 million eligible drink containers supplied into Tasmania every year, so there are still plenty more eligible drink containers to find and return for a 10 cent refund.”
“Whether you’re saving for summer fun or supporting your local footy club, Recycle Rewards makes it easy to turn empty drink containers into something full of value,” Mr Roughley said.
Top Tips for Peak Recycling Season
- Collect smarter, not harder. Keep a bag or box handy at home and an extra one in the car, boat or caravan. Our Big Bags of Change are now available for $4.50 at Service Tasmania stores statewide.
- Return regularly. Skip the holiday queues by dropping off your containers mid week and early or late in the day when refund points are quietest.
- Cash in or donate. Choose to receive your 10 cent refund directly to your bank account or donate to one of more than 550 registered donation partners.
- Check what’s eligible. Look for the 10c mark near the barcode and check your drink container’s eligibility by visiting recyclerewards.com.au or using the Recycle Rewards app.
- Find your nearest refund point. Visit recyclerewards.com.au or use the Recycle Rewards app to find the most convenient refund point to you. There are already 45 across Tasmania, including on King and Flinders Islands.
Since launching in May, Tasmanians have returned more than 40 million eligible containers to Recycle Rewards refund points. The most containers have been returned in Devonport in Tasmania’s northwest, followed by Cove Hill and Claremont in the south and Mowbray in the north. The Goodwood depot in Hobart is now the state’s busiest, with SEED staff kept busy processing more than 155,000 drink containers last week alone.
