Tasmania’s container refund scheme has recorded its biggest month of container returns since the scheme began on 1 May 2025.
In January 2026, Tasmanians returned more than 13.5 million eligible drink containers to Recycle Rewards refund points, surpassing all previous monthly totals. This record month reflects strong community engagement, with households, sporting clubs, schools and local charities embracing the scheme at 49 refund points across the state, including on King and Flinders Islands.
Recycle Rewards Scheme Coordinator TasRecycle CEO Ken Roughley said, “This is an extraordinary month for the scheme and for the state. Every container returned is one less in landfill or litter – and these results show Tasmanians are committed to making a real difference.”
The biggest contributing refund points for January were:
- Goodwood depot – 1.10 million
- Waverley depot – 0.94 million
- Somerset depot – 0.75 million
- Devonport RVM – 0.63 million
- Cove Hill RVM – 0.58 million
These strong results bring the total number of eligible drink containers returned by Tasmanians to more than 83.5 million in just nine months. By region:
- South – 40.5 million
- North – 24 million
- Northwest – 19 million
Recycle Rewards donation partners, including charities, schools and community groups, have also benefitted from the surge in container returns. In January, Tasmanians donated $46,794 in refunds – bringing the total amount donated to Recycle Rewards donation partners to more than $230,000 since the scheme began.
