Tasmanian kids have gotten together to create a new video that helps teach all Tasmanians young an old how to use the new Recycle Rewards reverse vending machines, showcasing how the next generation is embracing Tasmania’s container refund scheme.

The video captures the excitement and pride of young Tasmanians as they bring their bottles and cans to the reverse vending machine to be recycled, turning everyday actions into positive environmental impact. The kids explain how to use a reverse vending machine, which containers are eligible for a 10c refund, how to donate your refunds and ask refund point users to kindly take their ineligible containers, boxes and bags home with them to prevent litter.

According to TasRecycle CEO Ken Roughley, “Kids are the perfect champions for recycling – they’re curious, enthusiastic, and they love making a difference. This video is about showing all Tasmanians young and old how to use one of the new Recycle Rewards reverse vending machines.”

Nine-year-old Eleanor Barbour who appears in the video said “It was fun to film the video and meet all the other kids.” She also said “It’s important to keep waste out of our environment because it can hurt our animals.”

For eleven-year-old Aarav Velloor, who also appears in the video, “Recycling helps the planet and stops plastic from going into the ocean or landfill. It’s a small thing to do, but if everyone does it, it makes a big difference.

Aarav said that the reverse vending machines are easy to use. “You just scan your code, put the bottles and cans in and then you get a refund. It only takes a minute. People probably don’t realise how simple it is until they try it.” Aarav is saving his refunds to buy a soccer ball and intends to donate to charity too. “It’s always nice to help people,” he says.

The video is now live on the Recycle Rewards website and social media channels to provide support for all Tasmanians who want to learn how to use a Recycle Rewards reverse vending machine.

With more than 40 refund points around Tasmania, including on King and Flinders Islands, it’s never been easier to recycle. Every eligible drink container returned receives a 10c refund, which you can keep for yourself or donate to a local charity or community group.

Four months since Recycle Rewards began, Tasmanians are continuing to embrace the scheme. Statewide eligible container returns currently average more than 230,000 per day and growing, with more than 27 million already returned.

Aluminium remains the top material, accounting for approximately 63% of returns. Plastics made up about 21%, glass 15% and other materials about 1%.
