Just one month after contracting the Recycle Rewards Goodwood depot container collection service, operated by social enterprise SEED, Hobart’s Ibis Styles hotel is reporting reduced waste costs and is encouraging other hotel groups to realise the potential benefits.

The 296-room Ibis Styles hotel in Hobart is supplied free of charge with six 240L Recycle Rewards bins, which SEED collects and replaces weekly.

Ibis Styles’ Susanty Daale-Setiady said “We did need to educate all of our staff about the reasons for changing our cleaning and waste management processes, and we invested in small bins for each floor to make container sorting quicker and easier. But the benefit is worth the effort.”

Outcome:

  • Reduced co-mingled recycling collection. The hotel has already scaled back from three times per week to two. Susanty Daale-Setiady is confident they can further reduce their commercial co-mingled recycling collection to just one per week.
  • Corporate social responsibility. The refunds on eligible containers are split equally between SEED and the hotel, which intends to use its share to support another charity.

Daale-Setiady said the hotel is proud of the partnership. “We’re delighted that it has real benefits for the community and provides employment to people in need, and we encourage other hotels to get involved.”
