Tasmanians are being encouraged to turn the momentum of Clean Up Australia Day into lasting environmental impact by recycling eligible drink containers through Recycle Rewards.
Each year, Clean Up Australia Day mobilises thousands of volunteers across Tasmania to remove litter from beaches, bushland, waterways and streets. Among the most commonly collected items are drink containers, a clear reminder that while community clean-ups make an immediate difference, long-term change depends on everyday habits.
A simple way to reduce litter year-round
Tasmania’s container refund scheme was implemented to reduce litter and increase recycling. Recycle Rewards provides Tasmanians with a simple way to prevent litter and support a cleaner environment year-round by offering a 10 cent refund on most drink containers between 150 millilitres and 3 litres.
Eligible containers can be returned at refund points located across Tasmania. People can choose to keep their refund or donate it to one of more than 640 registered community and charity partners.
Many Clean Up Australia Day volunteers already separate eligible containers during clean-ups, ensuring are recycled through Recycle Rewards rather than sent to landfill. Once returned, containers are processed so valuable materials like aluminium, glass and plastic can be remade into new products.
Every container returned is a small action that adds up to lasting impact.
