The Burnie Beach Hotel has been a long-time sponsor of the Burnie Emus rugby club, helping their players with registration, travel and club events. Now with Recycle Rewards, the hotel has discovered a new way to support the team – and take care of recycling too.

Twice a week, rugby club volunteers empty the hotel’s container recycling bins, which they take to the Somerset depot for superfast sorting and returning. Their effort brings in about $120 per week. That means they’re handling up to 1000 containers each time they undertake container collection – a considerable volume to store, load and transport.

So ask yourself: do I have the appropriate safety gear for this job? Are my collection bags durable enough to be loaded and unloaded each week? Are my bags well signed to prevent contamination? Do I have a big enough vehicle to transport this volume in one go, or will I need to make multiple trips?

Additional bins in the different sections of the hotel makes collecting and separating containers quicker and easier for hotel staff. So too does secure storage – ideally outside – that container collectors can access without interrupting the hotel’s service.

For the Burnie Beach Hotel, partnering with the rugby club on container collection makes sense because they’re regulars: they support the communities that support them. This mutually beneficial arrangement reduces the hotel’s waste costs, supports its local community and helps contribute to Australia’s circular economy.

The Burnie Emus, meanwhile, enjoy a consistent and reliable income stream to support their players to achieve their best.
