Container FAQ’s

What containers will be included in Recycle Rewards?

All eligible drink containers will have a 10c label, which will mean providing that is in good condition (uncrushed, empty and with the label and barcode intact) it can be returned to a dedicated refund point in Tasmania.

Most 150ml to 3L drink containers will be eligible for a 10 cent refund provided they are made from glass, plastic, aluminium, steel or liquid paperboard (carton).

What can’t be returned?

There are some drink containers that are not eligible for a refund but these drink containers can still be placed in your kerbside bin.

Generally drink containers that are less than 150mL and greater than 3 litres are not eligible for a refund.

Other ineligible containers include:

  • Plain milk bottles or cartons (including plant-based milk substitutes)
  • Glass wine bottles
  • Glass spirits bottles
  • Cordial or syrup bottles
  • Juice containers (1L or greater)
  • Plastic containers less than 150mL

Household food containers (e.g. tuna cans) are not eligible for a refund.

Why are some drink containers eligible and not all of them?

The selected eligible drink containers for Recycle Rewards are those that are most commonly found as litter in the state’s streets, beaches, waterways and parks.

Tasmanians can continue to recycle other non-eligible containers such as wine, cordial, milk and spirit bottles in their kerbside recycling bin.

Does my drink container need to have a label or barcode?

If your drink container does not have a label it may not be recognised as an eligible container and will not be eligible for a refund.

Drink containers returned through reverse vending machines (RVMs) need a readable barcode so they can be scanned to make sure they are eligible.

Refund point operators may find it difficult to recognise containers as eligible, so acceptance at depots is at their discretion.

Can I crush my drink containers?

No. please do not crush your containers.  Containers must be identifiable as an eligible container to receive a refund.

It is recommended that containers returned meet the following requirements:

  • The container is not damaged to the extent that it is unsuitable for recycling
  • The barcode can be scanned
  • The label can be read

Do I need to wash my drink containers before returning them?

No, you don’t! Just make sure that your containers are empty. We also encourage you to leave lids on, helping to make sure every part of your container is recycled.
